THE PROJECT

The project

eVeR safe is addressing safety skills for autistic persons requiring support or substantial support (levels 1 or 2 according to DSM5). Considering the current lack of safety educational programs tailored to needs of autistic persons, the project develops a software system, attractive to young adults, which will leverage the potential of Virtual Reality (VR) technology to help them deal with emergency situations which can occur in everyday life. Through VR, autistic people will face conditions that are outside of their typical daily routine, and they will learn the procedures that they will have to follow in order to control the unexpected situation and cope with it safely.

Project Objectives

  • Create an educational tool, tailored to the needs of autistic persons, which will enable them to learn respond to emergency situations under almost real conditions, using VR technology
  • Reduce reaction time by teaching specific procedures to follow and practicing reflexes
  • Enable autistic persons to make the right choices and adopt them as routines
  • Teach autistic persons to accept help, ask for help when in need and moreover, offer their help to others
  • Create an innovative way of describing safety rules so as to be accessible to autistic persons
  • Change the way of thinking and acquire more understanding and empathy for people who think and act differently
